He was told that his father was a slave. A slave that put his whole heart into his job. A so called fool. But even though he was supposedly a stupid slave, he was also a fortunate slave they said. A passing Jedi Master saw Jake Katarn's Force potential and paid for his freedom, sending the boy on the adventure of his dreams to the nearest Jedi Order. So the faithful slave became a faithful Jedi Knight.

One day, Jake Katarn was sent to Endor. His mission was to protect a human settlement there for an unknown amount of time. Years pass as he guarded the people there with his life. But he was never called back. His Jedi reserve wore away as he shared the community's joys and sorrows. Soon Jake learned of love and it was then his call to return came. Making the hardest decision of his life, he rejected the call and outcasted himself from the Order. Jake the Jedi Knight became Jake the husband and soon a father.

Kenshin grew up in the time full of a change. The battles on Endor left his beautiful homeworld in tatters and it left him an orphan. His mother had died awhile ago, but the whirlpool of war had claimed his father now as well. Jake had picked up his lightsaber once again and joined the fray to protect his home. No one knew whether he was alive or not. Still at the young age of six, Kenshin could barely find food, let alone comprehend the chaos around him. A gruff man named Hiko found the boy scavanging for food amidst the destruction one day and took him in.

Hiko was a hermit. The giant of a man had secluded himself from the fast paced world as best as he could, keeping only the technelogical necessities. That is with the exception of his library and a scrap yard. He made most of the stuff he needed and he taught Kenshin to do so. Self-suffciency was always high on his education agenda.

Hiko taught Kenshin the ways of an enlightened man, imparting on the boy many a word of wisdom and taught him lessons of life through science, history, and philosophy. Though Kenshin probably didn't understand philosophy due to his young age, Hiko had a hunch that he would eventually. Kenshin was also taught how to defend himself. Since he wasn't able to protect his parents, martial arts and protecting others almost became an obsession to Kenshin.

One day, when Kenshin was twelve, a civil war broke out in one of the nearby settlement counties. It was small in scale, but it still was war. Hearing of all the death and destruction and wanting to protect innocent lives, Kenshin went against Hiko's warnings and ran off to fight in the war, taking with him a lightsaber his father left behind. It was a weapon he could only control with intuition and it was dangerous for him to use. Fortunately and unfortunately it worked. The boy was unknowingly guided by the Force, though to him it was only a killing sense; a thing he soon saw as a second nature. Kenshin managed to fight in a unthinking, calm rage. He was soon was nicknamed Guardian Angel because he only attacked when someone near him was in danger. Kenshin held out for a month. Not able to take it anymore, Kenshin ran back to Hiko, his heart in turmoil.

War was insane. In war, to protect was to kill. It was a continuing circle. And he soon learned many things were circles. Life and Death. Light and Dark. Good and Bad.

Kenshin spend days on end in silent thought, evaluating everything; life, purpose, causality and effect. After three long days, he came out of his silent spell with his philosophy and morality set hard.

But he still loathed the Force, knowing it only as a killing sense. He didn't understand it. But Hiko saw what it really was and knocked some sense back into the broken boy. Seeing that he could only help Kenshin so much, he sent the boy away to the nearest Jedi Temple. Kenshin took with him only a bundle of belongings and a pair of lightsaber crystals that was a parting gift from Hiko.

And so Kenshin Katarn began his training to become a Jedi with unwavering purpose: To protect no matter what.

One day as a young Jedi Knight, Kenshin was questioning a Hopefull when he came to a startling conclusion.

"But are we Jedi not people as well? Though the light may be brighter here, do not be blinded by it. In truth, it is the light that allows things to cast a shadow. Many come here in hopes of becoming Jedi so they can eliminate the darkness. Though in urgent situations we kill, the shadow can never truely be elimnated. The only thing we as Jedi can do is bring the light closer to the people so that the shadow will be reduced."

Two weeks later, Kenshin filed for an extended leave. The Jedi learned by observation and yet there were so many more things one could learn by experiencing life. Leaving the Order behind, the young Knight began his wandering of the universe.
